WFMW: Taming the Treasures

Life creates little treasures. You know what I mean: that lost tooth, the Valentine's Day picture, the ticket stub from that memorable concert. But I am not a big scrapbooker. So that means that things go into the boxes. But the problem with the boxes is that you end up with piles all over the house that at some point will get put into the boxes. But you need to find a place to put them, make sure that they don't get mixed in with the other kids (I have 4 kids and all their pictures drawn at 2 look the same;), and so on. So my tip of the day is to use a filing cabinet.

If you are like me, you have a file cabinet. But your family filing probably only takes a drawer or 2. So what I do is take one of those hanging folders for each person in the family. Then you can put in sub-folders if you want. For instance I have a section in NerdPie's folder that is just for notes and cards from her friends. Then put all of that person's memories in it. I have teeth in a ziploc bag, cards, photo magnets from VBS, etc. Then when ever you want to do something with it all (scrapbook or just put them into a box) you know where it is and whose it is!

It is the simple things that make life easier;).

Tackle It Tuesday: Pantry Clear Out!

You know those things you never get around to? You know, the ones that drive you crazy but you just don't seem to make time for? My pantry is one of those things. Well, Sunday while I was running a couple of errands NerdDad started clearing it out. I finally finished it Monday afternoon;). It is amazing the amount of junk I have in that pantry. The blue bins hold baking. decorating and freezer packaging for food. Then there is all the food, oy! I was amazed how much I actually had to throw out. I have been very convicted to cook out of my pantry and freezer for the next few weeks/months (my freezer is just as bad;).

But at least for today I will feel good that the pantry is finally done. I will feel guilty about the rest tomorrow!

Go check out some more projects at Tackle It Tuesday!

WFMW: Getting Stains Off Corian

Ugly eh? Genius me was emptying my pencil sharpener on the counter. Of course it was way over full and got lead shavings on the counter. So I started wiping them with a dry cloth and it left a little cloud. Then I got a wet dishcloth, wiped it and this is what I was left with.

Nothing got it off. I used soap water, straight dish soap, degreaser, and bathroom cleaner. Nothing. Now I know that you can sand the counter down (the beauty of solid surface) but I was terribly nervous about that. So after I was done scouring my sink with Comet I used the cloth. The reason I didn't use Comet in the first place was the Corian cleaning scare tactics. They said don't use anything abrasive, it will leave scratch marks. They said it would be better to use a fine grit sand paper. Well, they were wrong. It took it right out! No scratches, no damage! Apparently a little comet goes a long.

WFMW: Cheap and Easy Stain Remover

Stain removers are often expensive and don't always work. I have a great one that I use on clothes but the carpet it another matter. But I have 4 kids and a son who gets nose bleeds. So that is a lot of spots and stains on carpet to be had. That is blood in the first picture. I use a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 2 parts water. I put it in a spray bottle and shake it up before using it. I soak the area with the solution then just towel it off. Though the picture is off, you will notice that there isn't any blood in the second picture! Now there will be a white vinegar smell but that dissipates really quickly.
For just pennys you get a great stain remover that actually works. Can't top that!

A Water Tip

I have a little water tip for WFMW! I saw this in a magazine a while ago. They said to place nail polish on your shower dial (you know, where you turn it on and find the temp?) on the place you always land. This is so that you can go straight to the temp you want so you don't waste water. Well, we have 2 kids who can now be left in the shower in the shower but we have issues getting them going. The oldest does pretty well but has a tendancy to get the water too warm and we are afraid his is going to burn himself. The NerdPie doesn't like to get her face in the water to get to the dial. If we could have her set it right before she gets in she would get a warm shower. This helps the kids to know how warm they want the water but they won't burn themselves.

Save water, prevents burns and gives parents a little more freedom. What more do you want from a tip?

Morning Routine

Tammy's Recipes is hosting Make Your Home a Haven and this week she is focusing on having a Morning Routine of 5 things. The theory behind 5 things is that if you make your list to daunting you won't do it. To me the 5 things are just a few of the things to get my day off right but I haven't been consistent. So here is my first 5 things I want to get done in the morning.
1. Brush my teeth
2. Go to the gym
3. Shower and change
4. Make breakfast for the kids
5. Start a load of laundry

That is mine. What are yours?

WFMW: Kids and Laundry

(This is a republish because this week's Work For Me Wednesday is an oldie but goodie call)

Moms, let me break the news to you...You don't have to do all the laundry but you do have to invest some time in training and let go of the details. Let us first start with the dirty clothes. By the time they are a year and a half my kids are responsible to put their own dirty clothes in the hamper (and yes I remind them;). Then by 5 they can sort their clothes into color piles (I do mine just because of the gentle issue). I do a cursory look until about 6. Now I don't really check the NerdBug sorting unless I knew there was some iffy things. They are also always welcome to ask me if they are unsure which pile they go into. Then we go onto the washing and drying. When we moved into our new house we got the new front loading washer and dryer. This is great for kids. Both the 4 and 6 year old can easily put clothes in the washer and move them to the dryer. The 6 year old can even start the loads. Then I have the kids dump all the clean clothes into a basket and move them to the loft (where I want them to be). Now my kids do all this while I am nearby usually changing a baby or something like that (my laundry room is upstairs).

Then I invested in those pop up baskets for laundry that they sell with all the "stock up you dorm" stuff for $5, one for each kids. The ones I got at JoAnns have handles, are colored (one for each kid) and have sections you can velcro up or just leave as on big long basket. I sort all the laundry and put the appropriate foldables for each kid. For the 4 year old I give her wash cloths, spit cloths and her socks. The 6 year old gets all of his clothes at this point. Now, not everything is absolutely folded perfectly but it will be ok. My rule is, as long as it all fits in your drawers it is ok. I have gone through and shown them the correct way to fold, had them show me they can and let it go. Remember, you don't have to look at it or do it so don't complain.

Now I can't wait until they can iron;).

WFMW: Bed Sheet Storage

I now have 3 kids that are in twin beds. That is a lot of sheets. So here is what we do to free up the linen closet for the many towels that we also need;). It isn't rocket science and I am not saying I invented it(I have been accused of such before;). First, I fold all the sheets, put them into the pillow case, and fold the case over to make a nice square bundle. That means everything is neatly contained. Then we have the under bed bins and we place all that kid's sheets in it (except Nerdling's because he has a race car bed). You also can put a mattress cover in the bin. The other benefit is if you have to change the sheets in the middle of the night, they are right there.

That is my tip for the week! Go see some more at WFMW!

Tackle It Tuesday: Mega Bloks and Little People

We have lots of kids which means we have even more toys. The big cross age toys we have are Fisher Price Little People and Mega Bloksbecause all my kids love to play with them. When we lived in our old house they resided in under the bed bins and they stayed in those bins when we moved to the new house and the toys got placed in the play room. We also have severely outgrown the bins so we couldn't put the lids on them if we wanted to. But I knew these bins weren't the best choice but I didn't want to do boxes with lids because the baby couldn't get into them. So I was toodling around JoAnns and I saw these large bins on sale for 40% off (about $15). We were able to add a little vertical height and use the bins as shelves for all the larger pieces. Doesn't it look pretty now? We may end up getting more of these or even the ones half the size. You can stack them straight up or intermix them!

Button, Button Who has the Button?

Buttons. We all have them. We get them hooked onto new clothes and if you are like me, you never throw them away. And on the whole, that is a good thing. As I was digging through all my buttons looking for a replacement for one NerdPie lost on a dress, I was reminded that there was a reason for these crazy buttons. But I had to find a better storage solution. So I took an old prescription bottle and peeled off the label. Then I got rid of all those ridiculous baggies and just dropped them in. By the time I was done the bottle wasn't even close to being filled!

How I Schedule

Heart of the Matter has asked how we schedule. I have a confession, I don't do any firm scheduling but I have zones of schooling. But that is the beauty of homeschooling, you can form it to whatever works for you. So what do I actually do? Every season is different but lets work through this last academic year. We can't just look at school schedules without looking at life a little broader.
Monday, Wednesday and Friday: We do book work from about 11-12. Then we read together from 12:30-1, finish book work or do projects from 4:30-5:30.
Tuesday: NerdBug has choir in the morning and we are all at church until lunch. Book work about 4:30-5:30.
Thursday: NerdBug goes to the homeschooling room and does some book work and plays games from 9-11am. Then he finishes us book work from 4:30-5:30.
Friday: Sometimes we skip all real school to go play at the park or go do something fun.

So that is all I do! I keep it really laid back and try to just bring learning into life! What do you do?

WFMW: Life & Focus Help

Yes, this is the secret, a notebook. I keep it around the house and in my purse. Then when a thought comes to me (about anything) I jot it down. This helps to make sure things aren't missed (by forgetting it later) and helps me to focus on what I am doing. I don't need to try to hold on to things while I am trying to do my Bible Study, play with my kids or out shopping. I have a spot for things to tell my husband, things to buy, things to study, etc. It has been a huge blessing! Try it and let me know what you think.

Christmas Card Time

So I received our first Christmas card of the season today! It is a delightful picture card from our niece (on NerdDad's side) of her 2 cute little kids. But that brings up a time honored quandary. What do you do with all these cards? Of course you display them for the month and then what? Well, here is my multi step process that is very simple. The key is taking them fro the display and fully dealing with them.

The first thing you must, and I mean MUST, do is make sure you have the address of the sender in whatever permanent address book you have (be it day planner, outlook, or database) and then toss the envelope. One less piece to hold onto.

After Christmas I toss all plain cards into the recycling. Take all the letters and make any notes you need from the information (new baby birthdays, anniversaries, upcoming graduations, etc) in your planner. Then toss!

Now on to all those great pictures. Now this is a new area for me. You can toss, if you want but I am a girl so I am immediately invested;). First make sure that all the pertinent information is ON it some where. Now not on the face of the picture but the back, bottom etc. Make sure the year is on there also. Then we are onto a collection vessel. You can use a shoe box or photo box and put dividers in by year. The other option (the one I am going to use) is a scrapbook. You can get them cheap at any craft store and it doesn't have to be fancy. Then just slap them in an write all the information next to them. You can go further if you want but I am just not that good.

That is it! All of the cards, their information and all their mess is dealt with! One less thing to worry about. Go and enjoy your cards.

WFMW: Backwards Day

So for Backwards WFMW I am asking you all a question to help me. I am looking for ways to help with all the paper clutter. I already open the mail over a recycling bin. It is the short term paper. You know all the stuff you hold onto for a little bit and then it piles up.

Thanks!

WFMW: Tivo the Timesaver

So I was trying to think of a great time saver in my life and I would have to say that it is my Tivo. You can list all of your desired programs regardless of when they are on. You just program it and let it go. You can set a season pass so it gets Heroes every week. Those movies that are on in the middle of the night, Tivo's theres. Wishlist all Jane Austen movies, Tivos there. I even get Cable in the Classroom at 3 am. Then you can watch them commercial free when ever you have time. You can also hold onto them for as long as you have space on your hard drive.

Traveling and taking your laptop? Great, just install a Tivo desktop (free) and up load programs onto your computer. I took it to the hospital when I had my c-section and caught up on shows that were on summer hiatus.

I also love the fact that you can rate channels and shows for kids. Then when it sits 4 hours (or you turn it on) it kicks into KidZone and just lists the approved things. We have it set on preschool so only the preschool level shows are automatically on. Then we have added select cooking shows (NerdBug wants to be a chef). So if you want to send the kids in to watch something while you shower you don't have to worry (at least not about the tv). I also have Wiggles, DoodleBops and JoJo's Circus at my disposal. The Nerdling only watches while I cook dinner.

Then the newest thing is that there are select PodCasts so I can watch CrankyGeeks while I am cooking. Also, you can run it over your wireless network so it can play all my music stored on all my computers. The endless CD changer.

I love my Tivo because it works for me. And no, this wasn't a paid post though if you are Tivo and you want to hook me up......

Frugal Friday: Grocery Shopping

I have some very basic grocery shopping tips. First, make your menus so you know what you will be cooking. Second, always shop with a list and stick to it. Third, shop loss leaders (super sales) and match them with coupons. For example, Vons often has special sales on cake mixes so save all your coupons for those times only. If you go to a store with a free kids cookie, do it but decide about it before the kids ask. That also is the rule with the shopping. I never buy something BECAUSE my kids ask so they don't. They will ask if it is on the list but never beg for anything. For those of you who think that will happen "someday", someday has to be today. My kids are 6, 4, 2, and new and the 2 year old is already learning about begging and crying. I will blog more about shopping with kids another time. So there are my frugal shopping tips. Shop in good health.

UPDATE: For further clarification, I was thinking about comments that had been made about my kids expressing their desires and so I asked my 6 year old what he thought. I didn't realize how much he does ask because I answer it based on everything and not just his asking but he knows that a fit won't work. I will just say no and that is it without having to justify myself and actions to my kids. For example, I said make the free cookie decision before they ask so you don't have to hem and haw in front of them about it. Usually I will let them have it (and even mention it before they do) but sometimes I say no. If I try to explain that we are eating early and I don't think they will eat both the cookie and their dinner, they will naturally argue with me in an effort to convince me that they will. That is what I am trying to avoid.

As far as voicing their desires... I try not to do any shopping off the list (unless it is a surprise sale) based on my instant desire so I am trying to train them not to also. My kids are free to ask me to cook or buy any food any time I am home (and trust me they do) or making suggestions when I am making menus. Nerdbug and NerdPie probably ask me about recipes to make 2 times a week. Also NerdBug knows there are certain things I only buy on sale(like asparagus) and when he see a sale sign around them he mentions it and asks if we can get it. Please don't think I am a Nazi about it because I am not. I just like to get in, shop and get out and with 4 kids that takes training on everyone's behalf.

Frugal Fridays: Frugal Crafting

One of the best way to save money is crafting gifts instead of making them. But those craft supplies can really add up. But there is a way to save a little money. First keep a running list of all craft projects would you like to do. Then make a list of all supplies needed. Then go to a JoAnns store and sign up for mailer coupons. Usually each mailer will have at least one 40% off coupon. Then watch your paper for additional JoAnn ads that will also have a 40% off coupon. Also watch for Michaels ads that each contain a 40% coupon. Here we have a Michaels ad at least every other week but often every week. Also, at least where I live, JoAnns will take Michaels coupons also so I only have to go to one place. I have walked in many times with 3 coupons at one: Mailer coupon, Michaels coupon and JoAnns Sunday coupon. I don't even shop the ad itself unless the sail item is more than 40% off. Then walk in only getting the things on your list. Don't look around or take very long. If you are normal, the longer you are in a crafting store the more you will spend.

Something to keep in mind is that you want to more through your whole list this way, regardless of how small the price point. I admit that I have felt self-conscious using the coupons on $1 embroidered letters but I needed them and they were on the list. Now of course you need to make sure that you get the more expensive things first, just to make sure that you get the coupon but... There are some acceptions. After you get used to watching the ads you will see what is normally on good sales(more than 40%). An example is 12 by 12 scrapbook paper (I got these to make birth announcements). They are normally 50 cents a sheet but go on sale for 6 for 96 cents. So obviously I got them on sale and not on coupon.

So that is how I keep my crafting relatively under control!

Frugal Fridays: Free after Rebate

One of my big money saving tips is to take advantage of Walgreens Rebate Saver program. Every month they have some things completely free after rebate and many things just on rebate. One of the nice things is that you can use coupons on every product so if you watch what is out there you can actually get money back on things. I save all my toothbrush and tooth paste coupons for these and I usually get them for free or almost free. I recently got Suave shampoo and conditioner for a great deal. It was on sale 5 for $10 and then there was a $5 rebate and I use 3 coupons that totaled another $1.25 off. So I ended up paying $3.75 for 5 bottles.

Free this month contact solution, foundation, Pantene hair product and toothbrush.
My one recommendation is only buy things you will use not just all free things.

WFMW: Brand Loyalty

For this week's Works For Me Wednesday Shannon asked what brands we are loyal to. You know we all have those things that we are willing to spend a little more on. Here in the NerdFamily household we have quite a few. We are loyal to some things just for the taste such as JIF peanut butter, Mountain Dew, Dr. Pepper and Best Foods mayonnaise. Some things are because they work better for us like SpeedStick (for both NerdDad and myself) and Aveeno skin products. I also have a few household things that just work better overall. Ziploc bags are one of my big indulgences because the bag is thicker and the zipper is stronger. I also really like Dow's Scrubbing Bubbles. None of the generics or other brands seem to work as well.

So even though I try to be frugal we definitely have specific tastes. I have found that if I balance shopping on the sales matched with coupons (and rebates from Walgreens) the prices can be very manageable.

So where do your loyalties lay?

WFMW: Puzzle Organization

I was thinking up a post for this WFMW and I have to say that my best ones are not my own. The way that I organize my puzzle was taken from a book years ago. Why puzzles? For those of you who haven't experienced this yet, puzzle boxes were not meant to be used. Take the lid off and put it on a couple times and the box is broken in the corners. The other challenge with puzzles is finding the errant puzzle piece and figuring out where it goes. This is a multi-step project but I promise it doesn't really take that long. First get a box of colored pens. Each puzzle gets a number in a different color (the different colors are only important while the kids are little). Then write that number on the back of every piece. Then put the pieces into a zip top bag and write the number on the outside of the bag. Then cut out the front panel of the puzzle with the picture and all the details. Write the number on the back of the panel. Then get a folder for the panels and a box (a plastic shoebox works well) for the bag with the pieces. You can look at the panels and pick out your puzzle. Then just put it away! If you find a piece the kids left on the floor, you know right where it goes!
