A Little About Purim

Purim is from sundown on February 27th until March 1st this year (it is based on the Jewish calendar). But what is Purim you wonder? I have often heard it referred to as Jewish Halloween but there is more to it than that. It is the celebration of Esther and God's saving of the Jewish people! We are to remember this every year (Esther 9:28):

These days should be remembered and observed in every generation by every family, and in every province and in every city. And these days of Purim should never cease to be celebrated by the Jews, nor should the memory of them die out among their descendants.

It is a celebration. So in my house we might let the kids dress up, make noise makers and crowns. I will (probably) make Hamantaschen. The big feature is the telling of the Esther story. The children (and adults) boo whenever Haman is mentioned and cheer at the mention of Mordechai. We might also print off pictures and do some other fun stuff (go to my Frugal Homeschooler for activities and resources).

As Christians why do we celebrate Purim? Well, I could get into the whole Jesus celebrated Judaism and so we should also keep the holidays (with grace because we aren't under the law). Or how when we excepted Christ we were grafted into the family of Abraham. But.... Here is a simpler reason. God was faithful in saving the Jews and because of that we have Messiah. So we need to celebrate God's faithfulness to us by saving the Jews from Haman's hand.

There are lots of lessons in the book Esther (like if Saul would have been obedient...) but that is for a different day. Let us start by rejoicing in God's faithfulness! And the fact He uses a willing and obedient heart to do great things, like save a people.

I Think Someone is Hinting

NerdDad sent me a piece talking about how great the Dr. Horrible DVD is. So you think someone might be hinting for Valentine's Day? It is only $10.50 so I may just have to get it for me (I mean him;). If you missed Dr. Horrible or haven't heard of him, get out from under the internet rock. Dr. Horrible was hilarious and I definitely want to see it again! Joss Whedon is a genius with Neil Patrick Harris and Nathan Fillion are so funny!

Making Cute Clips and a Giveaway!

Cute clips eh? You wouldn't believe how easy and inexpensive they are to make.

Materials:

Alligator Hair Clips (you get them at a beauty supply place, you can get 60 for less than $5)

Ribbon ( I got the red ribbon 75% off $1.99 and the striped as part of a 3 pack for 50 cents)

Fray Check

Glue Gun

Binder Clip (unseen)


Process:
Cut a length of ribbon and apply Fray Check. Then place the Alligator Clip on the binder clip (this prevents the clip from glueing shut). Then place hot glue on first section of ribbon that goes on the top inside and press down. Then put hot glue on the clip itself and press the ribbon all along the clip. Tada! You are done!

Exciting New Addition to the NerdFamily!

The Nerd Family got a Wii! I was out a Costco and had an opportunity to get the last one they had. This (other than the normal computer desires) was the only thing NerdDad had wanted for Christmas and Valentine's Day. Now we couldn't find one or justify the expense for those holidays but... Obviously I seized this opportunity when it appeared. The Wii is so much fun, we love it. Something we didn't know that is cool is that you can play Gamecube games also! What I don't know is if there is an adapter to play GameBoy games. So any of you know? If so leave me the details.
